The condition of the tongue is a major criteria for Ayurvedic evaluation. Ama
(metabolic waste) from the stomach and digestive tract collect on the back of the tongue, forming a white or yellowish coating. This happens especially during the night. It is said that while swallowing, ama can return to the stomach and intestines and needlessly tax the digestive tract and immune system, since it is seen by the body to be a foreign substance.
